Join us for a solo exhibition of recent works by local painter Philip Smith.
Smith’s work uses bold shapes and compelling colour combinations to explore themes of change, indecision and collaborative creation.
As Smith grows older and feels more physically unstable, he notes a new found inability to confidently make decisions. What was once a fixed matter of personal certainty is now less so. In response, Smith has begun to relinquish certain aspects of his paintings to unknowing collaborators.
The collaborators know not what the outcome of their choices will be but they play into a game that influences colour, location and ground. These choices add a number of variables to the outcome, creating unforeseen relational geometries within the painterly arena. Each painting becomes a process of revelation and surprise.
Works are acrylic on canvas, and range between 60cm by 60cm and 85cm by 85cm, with prices starting at £400.
