A year in the studio

We celebrated our first year at Springbank studio this May, so it seemed the perfect time to reflect on all the fun we’ve had since opening our doors. Springbank was always meant to be a place to share and create with the local community, and our favourite moments have been when the doors are open wide, with people of all ages popping in to look at what’s on the walls or join us for a workshop.

Our first event of the year was Open Studios during Hither Green Festival, which marked us officially open. We loved meeting our neighbours and locals, and chatting about future events.

When the space is not open to the public, it is Georgia’s studio for her textile design practice. So when the calendar is clear, she spreads out and uses all the walls and surfaces for her designs. We had a visit from Lewisham Council to take some photos, including this rather lovely one of Georgia’s desk.

We started to host workshops in the basement studio, including a family screen printing workshop with Georgia and Making Mum workshops, for local mums with babes in arms to chat and craft in a casual, friendly environment.

Our first exhibition I Can’t Draw took place in September, and it was such a blast. You can read more about it in a dedicated journal post here. In the busiest Q4 of Georgia’s life, the exhibition was quickly followed by our second open studios of the year in November as part of Lee Green Open Studios.

We are looking forward to being part of it again this year. Join us for two weekends on the 15th to 16th and 22nd to 23rd of November, to have a look around the space. This year we will be sharing the studio with 2 local artists, so keep an eye out for an announcement of who they are soon.

We marked the winter solstice and the end of the year with our 4th open doors event in 6 months! We celebrated the work of 10 local makers, and opened for 2 weeks as a beautifully curated seasonal shop. Jo Lanthorne ceramics were such a hit, and we were obsessed with Lucy Turnbull’s embroidered tree decorations. We will be posting more pictures from last year very soon!

We are already starting to put our heads together for this years event on the 5th to 7th December - so put it in your diary now. If you’re a local maker and might like to take part, you can apply here.

And that leads us nicely over to this year. So far 2025 has been about reflecting on our busy close to 2024, and quietly planning our big events for the year. The first half of the year has very much been all about the workshops. We’ve hosted bundle dyeing, screen printing and a very popular Pressed Flower Frame Workshop.. As the days are slowly getting shorter, we are filling up the calendar with weekday evening and weekend workshops. You can have a look at what’s on offer and book a spot here.

We wanted to say a great big old thank you to everyone who has visited our space this last year. Whether you are a local who popped in, a maker who exhibited or hosted a workshop with us or you made the trip especially - you really have made the space!
